BackgroundI have been glassblowing ever since I got "hooked" watching some people blow glass at Red Deer College in the summer of 1990. The overwhelming heat of the large furnace and the white-hot glory holes was impossible to leave. The next year, I enrolled in a one week class in glassblowing at Red Deer College in their summer "Series". The course was taught by Marty Kaufman, from the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) in Calgary. I have been blowing glass ever since. I continued to take courses at Series and at ACAD. I have taken courses from Marty Kaufman, Barry Fairbairn, Jim Norton, Tyler Rock, Norm Falkner, Darren Peterson, Randy Birch, Jeff Holmwood, Mark Gibeau, Laurie Pedemark and Lisa Cerny. I am currently blowing glass with Randy Kaltenbach. In May 2002 we took a course from Darren Peterson in Red Deer, and then started blowing weekly (renting some studio time) from "Norm's Garage". In May of 2003, I started building a studio in my backyard - the "Tin Shack Studio". The process has been a tremendous learning experience, although it's had it's ups and downs. The studio was operational in November, but a disaster with the first glass charge meant rebuilding portions of the furnace. The furnace was repaired, and has been running continuously since February 2004. In the summer of 2006, the Calgary Studio was dismantled and the equipment moved to Vancouver Island, just north of Ladysmith, BC. Then began the process of building a new "Tin Shack" studio. By late fall, the studio was complete and operational. The New Tin Shack still realizes the goal of the orignal, and stands again as a wonderful place to create blown glass art. |
